ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Athletic Department ended 2012 atop the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings and has begun 2013 with two of the nation's No. 1-ranked squads: men's basketball and men's swimming and diving. Overall, Michigan has 11 teams ranked in the top 25 of their respective national polls.

The men's basketball team, which is off to the best start in school history with a 19-1 record, ascended to the top spot in the Associated Press media poll following its 74-60 victory at Illinois on Sunday (Jan. 27). Coach John Beilein's Wolverines are second in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll, three points behind Kansas (19-1). It is the first time the men's basketball team has been listed No. 1 in the polls since Dec. 5, 1992.

The top-ranked men's swimming and diving squad has dominated each of its six dual meet opponents this season and is currently tied with Arizona atop the national rankings. The Wolverines' most recent conquest was a 153-90 victory over Purdue on Jan. 14. Head coach Mike Bottom's squad has been ranked No. 1 by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) since Nov. 6.

In addition to the two No. 1-ranked teams, the men's and women's gymnastics teams rank No. 3 in the GymInfo national team standings. The women's gymnastics program spent the previous two weeks as the No. 1 team in the country.
