PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The University of Michigan placed 50 student-athletes from seven winter athletic teams on the 2010 Winter Academic All-Big Ten Conference team, announced by the league today (Wednesday, March 31).

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. The conference office will announce its final 2009-10 Academic All-Big Ten team for the spring sports in June, and the second annual Big Ten Distinguished Scholars team in July.

Among the 2010 winter honorees are a pair of basketball guards in junior Manny Harris (Detroit, Mich./Redford HS) and sophomore Zack Novak (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton HS). Now a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Harris is a general studies major and is a three-time All-Big Ten selection and 2010 NABC all-district second team pick. Novak, who is in his first year of eligibility for the conference honor, is enrolled in U-M's Ross School of Business and was named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV team after maintaining at least a 3.3 GPA as a starter on the men's basketball team.

Three members of the women's basketball team, which plays in the WNIT semifinals at Crisler Arena this evening, were also recognized for their academics. All-Big Ten honorable mention starting guards Veronica Hicks (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood HS) and Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson HS) were joined by Courtney Boylan (Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS) on the Academic All-Big Ten team.

Seven members of Michigan's 2010 Big Ten champion women's gymnastics team earned academic all-conference honors, including three-time All-Big Ten first team selection Sarah Curtis (Reno, Nev./Reno HS). On the men's side, 11 of U-M's 18 eligible men's gymnasts were named Academic All-Big Ten, led by senior co-captain David Chan (Singapore/Hale School, Perth). A walk-on as a freshman, Chan is a finalist for the Nissen-Emery Award, which annually honors the nation's outstanding senior gymnast for athletics and academics. He is a two-time All-American majoring in aerospace engineering. The team will attempt to defend its 2009 Big Ten championship this weekend (April 2-3) in Columbus, Ohio.

In the pool, four All-America swimmers earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition. A mathematics major, senior Andre Schultz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Palmares) is a 10-time NCAA All-American and now a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. An industrial and operations engineering major, sophomore Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson HS) earned his first conference academic award. He captured two Big Ten titles -- the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly -- at this year's conference championship, giving him four in his young career. He is also a four-time NCAA All-American.

On the women's side, senior Margaret Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) concluded her collegiate career as a seven-time NCAA All-American, 14-time honorable mention All-American and six-time Big Ten champion. The movement science major has been named Academic All-Big Ten three times and holds the Big Ten record in the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.41), which she set this season. Fifth-year senior Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) is a first-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and has collected an NCAA title (2008 1,650-yard freestyle), five All-America and five honorable mention All-America awards. The psychology major holds Big Ten records in the 500- (4:39.60), 1,000- (9:36.67) and 1,650-yard (15:51.29) freestyles and was the 2008 Big Ten Swimmer of the Year.
