CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC) announced on Wednesday (May 19) that NAAC Past President Judy Van Horn, associate athletics director/senior woman administrator (SWA) at the University of Michigan has been named the recipient of the 2010 Frank Kara Leadership Award.
"Judy's vision and tireless work effort were the driving force behind NAAC's restructuring and reorganization," stated Awards Committee Chair Tricia Turley, associate athletics director for compliance and student services, Ohio University. "Her influence not only motivates her compliance peers but also extends nationally to other collegiate leaders. Her demonstrated commitment to the compliance profession makes her most deserving of the Frank Kara Leadership Award."
Van Horn began her tenure as associate athletics director/SWA at Michigan in 2001, mainly overseeing the athletic department's Compliance Services office. Van Horn serves as the University's primary liaison with the Big Ten Conference Office, NCAA and Michigan's Office of the General Counsel for compliance issues and is a member of the athletics department executive staff.
Recipients of the Frank Kara Leadership Award display exceptional leadership and unique vision for compliance initiatives, as well as demonstrating a commitment to furthering the compliance profession through being instrumental in the revitalization of NAAC.
Also being announced are the recipients of the inaugural Organizational Leadership Award -- the University of Texas' DeLoss Dodds (men's athletics director) and Chris Plonsky (women's athletics director). The recipients will be honored Tuesday, June 22 during the NAAC Convention at the Marriott Hotel in Anaheim, Calif.
