Retired Numbers and Honored Jerseys

Only three sports -- baseball, football and men's basketball -- have retired numbers. Men's basketball has retired just one number but has honored jerseys of four former student-athletes who made significant contributions to the program.

The football team brought its retired numbers back into circulation from 2011-14, and honored each with a Legends distinction that included a jersey patch and customized locker in Schembechler Hall and Michigan Stadium. In July 2015, U-M announced plans to take the jerseys associated with the Michigan Football Legends back off the field.

Gerald Ford (#48), Tom Harmon (#98), Desmond Howard (#21), Ron Kramer (#87), Bennie Oosterbaan (#47) and the Wistert brothers (#11) -- Albert, Alvin and Whitey -- had their jerseys retired in a ceremony against Ohio State on Nov. 28, 2015. At that time, Howard's No. 21 jersey was officially retired. Howard's was the only jersey of the six that was not formally retired at Michigan prior to the implementation of the legends program.
