The NACDA Directors' Cup was established in 1993-94 to honor institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men's and women's. Points are accumulated after each athletics season based on an institution's finish in up to 20 sports throughout the year, 10 each for men and women. The winner receives a crystal trophy, pictured to the right.
Michigan has finished in the top 15 of the Directors' Cup standings in 17 of the award's 19 seasons, including a runner-up finish in 2003-04 and a third-place standing in 1999-2000 and again in 2007-08.
