ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office announced its 2012 Distinguished Scholar award recipients today (Wednesday July 11), with 49 University of Michigan student-athletes receiving the prestigious designation. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution with a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. U-M's 2012 honorees include 28 female and 21 male representatives across 19 sports.

Headlining the list of U-M recipients is 2012 Academic All-America third-team and All-Big Ten honorable mention guard Zack Novak (Chesterton, Ind./Chesteron). The three-time team captain received his bachelor's degree this past spring in business administration after leading the Wolverines to a share of the 2012 Big Ten championship.

Senior volleyball player Michelle McMahon (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar for the third time. A communication major, McMahon is also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Joining her is senior Syque Caesar (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy), a communication major who will compete in London as a member of the 2012 Bangladesh Olympic gymnastics team. Caesar was also the 2011 Big Ten parallel bars champion and a member of U-M's 2010 NCAA champion team.

The 2012 Big Ten champion men's swimming and diving team placed eight student-athletes on the Distinguished Scholar list. Leading the contingency is senior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson), an industrial and operations engineering major. Madwed was a five-time NCAA All-American, four-time Big Ten champion and the Big Ten Swimmer of the Year in 2012.

A pair of 2012 women's track and field second-team All-Americans earned the academic award: junior/sophomores Jillian Smith (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) and Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western). An environment major, Smith finished ninth at the outdoor NCAA Champonships in the 1,500-meter run. She was a two-time All-American in 2011 and was named the 2010 Big Ten Indoor Freshman of the Year. Tobel placed 10th in the pole vault at the NCAA outdoor meet. She is majoring in biopsychology, cognitive and neuroscience.

On the men's side, junior Jack Greenlee (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier), the 2012 Big Ten outdoor pole vault champion, earned his first Big Ten Distinguished Scholar award. He is enrolled in U-M's Ross School of Business.
