ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office released its fall 2010 Academic All-Big Ten teams on Thursday (Dec. 2), which includes 55 University of Michigan student-athletes. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Eight U-M football players earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition, including redshirt freshman starting safety/linebacker Cameron Gordon (Detroit, Mich./Inkster) and redshirt sophomore starting offensive lineman Patrick Omameh (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales). Redshirt junior offensive lineman Zac Ciullo (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) also earned his first spot on the academic team. He will forego his fifth year of eligibility and enroll in U-M's Law School next fall.

A pair of unanimous All-Big Ten first-team volleyball players were named to the Academic All-Big Ten team in senior setter Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and junior outside hitter Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph). A two-time All-American (2009 first team, 2008 second team), Zimmerman earned her second spot on the academic team and was U-M's 2009-10 Female Athlete of the Year after leading the Wolverines to the 2009 NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Michigan's all-time assists leader, she and the 23rd-ranked Wolverines are in Seattle where they take on No. 11 Washington in NCAA Tournament first-round action this evening (Dec. 2) at 7:30 p.m. PST.

Sixteen of the 17 eligible women's soccer players were named to the Academic All-Big Ten team, including biology major and senior defender/midfielder Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester). Carron is also a two-time Academic All-District IV second-team selection and now a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. A 2010 all-conference first-team honoree, Carron also earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar award in 2009-10 for maintaining a GPA above 3.7 during that academic year.

A graduate student in U-M's Ross School of Business, field hockey senior Paige Laytos (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) is a two-time NFHCA third-team All-American and now a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. She was also named to the 2010 All-Big Ten first team and All-Big Ten Tournament team. Laytos had the game-winning assist in Michigan's semifinal win over Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament (Nov. 5). She concluded her U-M career with 27 assists, tied for seventh on the school's all-time assists list. She also was named to the NFHCA Senior Game played on Nov. 20 in College Park, Md.
