ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office released its fall 2013 Academic All-Big Ten teams on Wednesday (Dec. 11), and it includes 60 University of Michigan student-athletes. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Highlighting the list are 13 members of the women's soccer team, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight in November and closed the season with an 18-4-1 record.

Senior Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville), a 2013 NSCAA/Continental Tire Division I Women's All-American, will graduate with a degree in economics. She holds Michigan career records in goals (49), goals per game (0.62), points (118) and points per game (1.49). Ezurike is also one of 15 national semifinalists for the 2013 MAC Hermann Trophy, the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer. She is a four-time All-Big Ten, three-time all-region and now three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.

The three-time defending NCAA Great Lakes Regional champion women's cross country team placed eight runners on the academic squad after finishing fourth at the NCAA National Championships in November. Junior Brook Handler (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) was named to the Academic All-Big Ten team for the second time and is also a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. The chemical engineering major earned all-region honors this fall with her seventh-place finish at the regional meet.

The U-M men's soccer team placed 10 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big Ten, led by senior Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville), the 2013 Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and a two-time All-Big Ten first team selection. A physical education major, Arnone has twice been named Academic All-Big Ten, and was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar following the 2012-13 academic year.

The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the winter and spring seasons, and the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school.
