ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Katelynn Flaherty scored 29 points and junior Hallie Thome recorded her seventh career double-double (15 points, 12 rebounds) to lead the No. 24 University of Michigan women's basketball team to a 75-61 victory over George Mason in the Preseason WNIT opener on Friday (Nov. 10) at Crisler Center.
Junior Nicole Munger added 14 points while senior Jillian Dunston and freshman Hailey Brown each had 10 rebounds. Michigan held a massive edge on the glass, outrebounding George Mason, 54-26, including 23 offensive rebounds.
The Wolverines got off to a hot start, leading 9-3 at the first media timeout. George Mason kept things close thanks to some hot shooting from Nicole Cardano-Hillary, who made four triples in the opening quarter.
Michigan led, 21-19, heading into the second quarter, but that lead quickly evaporated after a 7-0 run by the Patriots, forcing a timeout. Munger hit a three-pointer out of the break to spark the Wolverines to a 9-0 run of their own, combining with Flaherty (four points), freshman Deja Church (three) and Brown (two). The defense locked down George Mason for most of the second quarter, as it went scoreless for more than six minutes. Michigan led, 37-31, at the break.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the third quarter. George Mason cut it to two (48-46) with 3:34 left in the frame, but Flaherty struck back with a three-pointer off a restart. Church hit a triple of her own with one second left to send Michigan into the fourth quarter with a seven-point lead.
The Patriots continued to hang around, trimming the lead to four with 7:54 to go. After a pair of free throws by Munger, Flaherty got hot, hitting one of her three triples in the last six minutes of the game to give Michigan a nine-point lead and some breathing room. The Wolverines extended their lead to as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter and held George Mason without a field goal over the final 4:43 of the game.
With the win, the Wolverines advance to the second round of the Preseason WNIT, where they will play Liberty on Sunday (Nov. 12) at Crisler Center. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
