MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team got event wins from three student-athletes and one relay to jump out to leads on No. 17 Minnesota (97-70), No. 18 Wisconsin (120-47) and Penn State (132.5-34.5) following one day of competition at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on Friday (Nov. 3).
The Wolverines showcased their depth in the 200-yard IM, taking four of the five spots. Junior Siobhán Haughey trailed Wisconsin's Beata Nelson at the halfway point, but overtook her on the breaststroke leg, outsplitting Nelson by nearly two seconds. She was followed at the wall by senior Samantha Yeo (2:01.63), sophomore Miranda Tucker (2:02.08) and freshman Emma Cleason (2:03.71), who finished 3-4-5.
Junior Yirong Bi dominated the 500-yard freestyle, claiming it by more than four seconds (4:41.26). The sister tandem of senior Gabby DeLoof and junior Catie DeLoof went 1-2 in the 100-yard freestyle (49.12/49.73).
The Wolverines also won the 200-yard freestyle relay to open the meet. The foursome of Haughey, Gabby DeLoof, Catie DeLoof and freshman Claire Maiocco touched at 1:30.80.
Michigan used its depth to pick up valuable places in events in which it didn't have a winner. Senior Clara Smiddy and junior Taylor Garcia went 2-3 in the 100-yard backstroke, while Tucker, junior Jamie Yeung and senior Emily Kopas went 2-3-4 in the 200-yard breaststroke. The 200-yard butterfly featured three of the Big Ten's best, as sophomore Vanessa Krause took second (1:58.31) in between Nelson and Minnesota's Danielle Nack. All three swimmers finished within a second of each other.
In the diving well, freshman Nikki Canale led the team with a third-place finish on one-meter (277.95).
The four teams return to the pool tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 4) to close out the quad meet. Action commences at 10 a.m. CT inside the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
