ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against the Valparaiso Crusaders Monday (Aug. 28) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines trailed 1-0 before sophomore Jack Hallahan, who tied the program record for shots in a match with 11, Â leveled the score line with his first marker of the season at the 80:46 mark.
The Wolverines outshot the Crusaders 7-2 in the first half and dominated possession and the run of play throughout. Although multiple chances did not lead to a breaktrhough, U-M (1-0-1) was led by a pair of shots from junior Robbie Mertz and sophomore Lucas Rosendall.
The second half was much of the same story early on, before Valpo (0-1-1) put together a goal against the run of play in the 63rd minute. Crusader attacker Jonas Elder sent in a cross from the right wing, with the low service skipping off a U-M defender. The deflection landed right at the feet of Jordan James eight yards out, and he finished inside the left post to give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines ramped up the pressure from then on, led by Hallahan, who had 10 shots in the second half. He was rewarded for his persistence in the 81st minute, as junior Marcello Borges darted down the left flank and threaded a ball to sophomore Lucas Rosendall. Rosendall was then able to tap a service to Hallahan, who slotted the ball home into the lower right portion of goal to equalize at 1-1.
Minutes later, Borges was at it again, as a shot from 25 yards out boomed toward Valpo goalkeeper Nacho Miras. Miras, who was excellent all night, spilled the try to the feet of freshman Umar Farouk Osman, but the follow-up on the doorstep was blocked out of bounds to preserve the scoreline.
In extra time, U-M outshot the Crusaders 6-2, but none of the chances came to fruition as the matched settled as a 1-1 draw.
The Wolverines, in the midst of a five-match homestand, will return to action on Friday (Sept. 1), hosting the Cleveland State Vikings at 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
