MADISON, Wis. -- With the deciding match going three extra holes, the fifth-seeded University of Michigan women's golf team fell to No. 8 seed Oregon State today (Monday, Sept. 18) in a consolation semifinal of the East & West Match Play Challenge being held at Wisconsin's University Ridge Golf Course. The Wolverines will now play for seventh place against Nebraska on Tuesday (Sept. 19) at 8:30 a.m. CDT.
Following a 2-up victory from junior Elodie Van Dievoet over OSU's Nichole Schroeder and a dominating 6-and-4 win by freshman Ashley Kim over OSU's Ellie Slama, the Wolverines found themselves in position to advance. However a 2-and-1 loss to Haley Nist by senior Emily White and a 6-and-4 defeat by sophomore Alisa Snyder to Olivia Benzin drew the match all square, 2-2.
With one match to go, it came down to the battle between senior Megan Kim and OSU's Susie Cavanagh, which ended up being the day's best match and went three extra holes. After exchanging wins on the back nine, Cavanagh held a slim 1-up lead heading to the front side.
She extended it to 2-up by taking No. 2, but Kim battled back and squared the match with wins on Nos. 3 and 5. Kim took her first lead with a win on No. 6 and held it going into the final hole, but a birdie by Cavanagh squared the match, sending it to extra holes.
After Kim made back-to-back dramatic par putts from 12 and 15 feet to open the extra session, Cavanagh countered with nearly equal-length putts of her own. On the third playoff hole, Kim's approach on the par-3 12th hole landed 30 feet away, while Cavanagh's landed within five feet. After almost draining the 30-foot putt, Kim tapped in for par. Cavanagh made her putt to secure the hole and the victory for the Beavers in 21 holes.
"We had some great stretches of golf, but this is a true team game once we get to match play," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "Every shot and hole counts, and Oregon State outplayed us this morning. I'm excited to see how we handle this tomorrow in our final match against UC Davis."
In the individual bracket, senior Kathy Lim has a chance to win her second East & West Match Play individual title following her 1-up win over UC Davis' Hannah Suh. Lim won the 2015 individual bracket at University Ridge with a 4-and-3 victory over Wisconsin's Jessica Reinecke.
After Suh built a 2-up lead through eight holes, Lim squared the match with victories on Nos. 9 and 10 and built a 2-up lead of her own with wins on Nos. 13 and 14. Suh won the 17th to extend the match to the final hole, which the duo halved with pair of bogeys, giving Lim the 1-up win.
