ARLINGTON, Texas -- The University of Michigan baseball team connected for a pair of three-run homers on Monday (Feb. 21) as the Wolverines completed a season-opening Texas trip with a 9-7 win against the University of Texas at Arlington at Clay Gould Ball Park.
Leading 4-3 in the eighth inning, Tito Flores launched a three-run homer to left to highlight a five-run frame and provide some cushion.
Things got interesting in the ninth inning as UTA scored four times with two outs but Ahmad Harajli came out of the bullpen with a runner in scoring position and the tying run at the plate before shutting the door for his first career save.
UTA jumped on top in the bottom of the first on an infield single and a double to the gap against sophomore right-hander Chase Allen, who was making his first career start.
In the second, Joe Stewart singled with one out, moved to second on a hit batter and stole third base before Jack Van Remortel launched an RBI double to the wall in left.
Stewart gave Michigan a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning when he launched a two-out, three-run home run 398 feet over the left field wall on a ball that left his bat at 107 miles per hour.
UTA got an unearned run back in the bottom of the frame after a hit batter, single, error and a double play ball.
Allen pitched well for Michigan, getting the Wolverines into the sixth inning. There he surrendered a one-out double and a two-out single up the middle that brought a run home to make it a 4-3 game. Head coach Erik Bakich went to the bullpen after Allen's four-strikeout day in favor of lefty Jaylen Jones, who induced a fly ball to end the frame.
Jones ran into trouble in the seventh, walking a pair of runners as he gave way to Walker Cleveland. Cleveland immediately picked the trail runner off at first base before inducing a harmless fly ball to end the threat. Michigan's bats then woke up in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Stewart led all players with three hits while Jimmy Obertop and Van Remortel added two hits each.
Michigan returns to action on Friday (Feb. 25) when the Wolverines start a five-game series in South Florida against Seton Hall in a game being played at Florida International University.
