MIAMI, Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team put up double figures in the run column again Sunday night (Feb. 27), as the Wolverines completed a sweep of Florida International University by a score of 13-9 at the FIU Baseball Stadium.
The game lasted over five hours, including a nearly two-hour rain delay. Michigan led the game 7-0 before the rain came, however its bullpen issued seven free passes over a span of 2.2 innings to allow FIU back into contention.
It was a 10-9 game in the ninth inning when the tenacious Michigan offense kept at it, scoring three times on a triple from Riley Bertram, a double from Clark Elliott and Matt Frey's fourth hit of the night.
That rally helped close the door on a game that saw both teams combine for 17 hits, 25 walks and two hit batsmen. Willie Weiss earned a three-inning save as the closer struck out four batters in 3.1Â innings of hitless relief.
Frey led all players with four hits while he, Bertram (two hits) and Joe Stewart (two hits) all collected three runs batted in. Clark Elliott also added two hits in the game.
Michigan started quickly as Stewart delivered a two-run single in the second inning moments after Bertram started the scoring with a bunt single that went for an RBI as part of a three-run frame.
In the third, Bertram plated the fourth Michigan run of the game, Elliott followed with an RBI single to left, and Frey collected his third hit in as many innings with a two-run single to make it 7-0.
After a nearly two-hour rain delay, reliever Logan Wood entered and issued three walks, a hit batsman, and an infield single that led to three FIU runs before Walker Cleveland entered the game and promptly picked off a runner to end the frame.
Tito Flores led off the sixth inning with a long homer to left field but in the bottom of the frame, three walks, an infield single and a dropped popup opened the door for FIU as the Panthers scored four times to make it a 9-7 game. Weiss entered the fray and got a strikeout to end the damage.
Stewart added another solo homer in the seventh, connecting for the second time in as many nights for a solo shot over the right-center field wall and a 10-7 Michigan lead.Â
Weiss turned wild in the eighth, issuing three walks and uncorking two wild pitches that allowed FIU to score twice without the benefit of a hit as things drew to a 10-9 score. He settled in the ninth to earn a three-inning save.
Michigan has an off day on Monday before getting back into action on Tuesday (March 1) as the Wolverines begin a two-game series at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. Both games of the series are scheduled to be streamed on FAU.com.
