LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Michigan baseball team dropped the first game of a Friday (March 11) doubleheader at Louisville by a score of 5-3 at Jim Sullivan Stadium. The second contest was suspended due to inclement weather with the Wolverines leading 13-4 after four innings. The teams will resume the suspended game Sunday (March 13) at noon, followed by the series' regularly scheduled third game.
Louisville hung on for a 5-3 win in the first game as Michigan did not get the hits when needed, batting 2-for-18 with runners on base and 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Jimmy Obertop drove a second-inning home run high over the right-field wall for an early lead.
Louisville took the lead in the third inning, scoring twice thanks to a pair of leadoff hits, including an RBI triple, and a sacrifice fly. The Cardinals extended their lead in the fourth thanks to a pair of two-out hits, including an RBI double from No. 9 hitter Logan Beard.
Logan Usher added an opposite-field bloop double in the sixth to score another run following a leadoff hit batsman.
In the seventh, Michigan got back into the game as Riley Bertram led off with a single and scored on a double from Clark Elliott. Joe Stewart followed with an RBI groundout to pull the Wolverines within a run, 4-3.
Dalton Rushing got a run back for Louisville in the bottom of the frame on a solo shot against reliever Noah Rennard.
Michigan stranded two more runners in the eighth and had the tying run on second with one out in the ninth, but the Wolverines could not break through, leaving 11 runners in all. Bertram, Elliott, and Stewart all had two hits in the opener to lead U-M.
In game two, Ted Burton staked the Wolverines to a first-inning lead thanks to a two-run single before the weather worsened significantly.
Louisville scored an unearned run in the second, but Michigan responded with 10 runs on five hits in the third inning against three different UL hurlers to claim a 12-1 lead. Obertop delivered a bases-loaded, two-run single as U-M sent 16 batters to the plate.
Louisville added an unearned run in the third and two in the fourth as a two-out fly ball was lost in the snow. Tito Flores and Stewart made sensational diving catches on otherwise routine fly balls in the inning before the umpires finally paused the game for safety reasons.
