BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team pounded the baseball all game Wednesday night (March 2) as the Wolverines overpowered Florida Atlantic University by a score of 20-13 at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
The teams scored in bunches as Michigan scored its 20 runs in just four innings -- including 15 runs spread acrosse the final three innings of the game -- while FAU scored also scored all of its runs in four frames.
Ted Burton terrorized FAU all night and in both games of the series. The junior launched a seventh-inning grand slam after doubling twice earlier in the game before also adding a two-run single in the ninth. He ended the two-game series with eight hits, including five doubles and the homer. Â
Michigan started the scoring with a five-run outburst in the second inning behind Burton's fourth double of the series, a two-run double from Clark Elliott and an RBI single from Joe Stewart.
FAU answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame following three hits, three walks, an error, a dropped foul ball that could have been scored an error and a bases-loaded wild pitch. The Owls took a 6-5 lead the following inning, following consecutive doubles to start and a two-out single up the middle against U-M reliever Avery Goldensoph. FAU extended its lead to 7-6 in the fourth when a run scored on a double-play ball.
It wasn't until senior Angelo Smith entered the game in the fourth inning that things settled on the mound for the Wolverines. Smith struck out five batters and scattered four hits in 2.2 innings before tiring and giving way to Chase Allen in the seventh. Smith was credited with the decision.
Michigan stormed back in the seventh with another five-run frame, and Burton was right in the middle of things again. A wild FAU bullpen loaded the bases and then hit Tito Flores to drive home a run, bringing the score to 7-6. With Burton stepping to the plate, the Owls went to the bullpen but it mattered little as Burton hammered the first pitch he saw high over the left field wall for a grand slam homer and a sudden 10-7 Michigan lead.
The visitors added four more runs in the eighth inning with Tito Flores delivering a big two-run double down the line in right field as part of the frame.
FAU answered with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, coming on three walks, a hit batsman, one wild pitch and three singles, before Jacob Denner came on to get a strikeout and preserve a one-run lead.
Michigan then scored six more times in the ninth with Matt Frey launching his first U-M homer, a three-run job high over the wall in right field, before Burton added a two-run single for his sixth and seventh runs batted in.
Jimmy Obertop, Stewart, Frey and Flores followed behind Burton as players with multiple hits for a Michigan team that has shown its offensive prowess throughout the early going.
Michigan has a travel day on Thursday before participating in the Keith LeClair Classic this weekend (March 4-6), hosted by East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. The Wolverines are matched with fellow Big Ten Conference member Maryland in the first game of the tournament on Friday (March 4) at noon.
