GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The University of Michigan baseball team stranded the game-tying run in scoring position Sunday (March 6) as the Wolverines completed the Keith LeClair Classic with a 6-5 loss to Indiana State at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Indiana State was staked to a four-run second inning as U-M outfielders lost a pair of fly balls in the early morning sun and the Sycamores capitalized with five hits in the frame.
Matt Frey got a run back in the third as he took the first pitch he saw and lined it high over the right field wall for a solo shot.
Jake Marti cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth in a pinch-hitting appearance. With runners in scoring position, Marti sent a shot to the gap in right-center field that was robbed with a diving catch, but it was enough to score a run and be scored as a sacrifice fly.
Michigan handed that run back to ISU in the seventh following a single to lead off, a throwing error on a bunt single and a sacrifice fly.
The Wolverines mounted a two-out rally in the eighth to make it a one-run game. Joe Stewart singled home a run and came around on a long double from Ted Burton. Following a pitching change it was Frey again, who found the hole on the right side to score Burton and make it a one-run game. ISU closer Connor Fenlong responded with a strikeout with a runner in scoring position to end the frame.
In the ninth, Riley Bertram singled with one out and advanced to second where he was stranded to end the game.
Jacob Denner was the tough-luck loser on the day, striking out seven batters in 6.2 innings while allowing six runs -- a figure that could have been zero with different luck.
Frey led the way offensively with three hits while Bertram, Burton and Jimmy Obertop had two hits apiece for the Wolverines.
Michigan will return to action next weekend (March 11-13) with a three-game series at Louisville.
