ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team completed a weekend sweep of Cal State Fullerton Sunday (April 10) as a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth completed an 11-10 comeback victory at Ray Fisher Stadium.
In a tie game in the ninth, Jack Van Remortel singled with one out to start the rally. Pinch-runner Alex Fedje-Johnson entered and made an impact as Jordon Rogers singled just off the glove of Cal State Fullerton shortstop Jack Haley. The ball tricked into left-center and Fedje-Johnson scampered into third base. Rogers then stole second base with Clark Elliott at the plate and a 1-2 count. Fullerton reliever Michael Weisberg uncorked a pitch that bounded towards the Michigan dugout and Fedje-Johnson dove across the plate to complete the series sweep.
Michigan returns to action Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. non-conference game at Notre Dame.
A back-and-forth game saw CSF take a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning and extend its lead to 7-3. Things then got wild in the bottom of the sixth as Michigan scored six times to take its first lead of the day.
Already deep into the Fullerton bullpen, reliever Ryan Gil was ruled to have committed an error when he rolled a ball into the dugout following a 2-0 pitch to Elliott, thinking that time had been called and wanting a new baseball. However, the umpire ruled that time had not been given and awarded two bases to all runners, scoring two on the play to make it a 7-5 game. A walk and a single were then followed by an RBI single from Ted Burton to make it a 7-6 game. Then, Tito Flores launched a three-run bomb over the left-field wall to give U-M a 9-7 lead against a stunned Titan team. Flores finished his day with three hits, a walk and a hit by pitch.
Fullerton responded in the eighth inning against lefty Angelo Smith. With two outs, an infield single, a double and a seeing-eye single through the right suddenly tied it at 9-9. Another bloop hit fell just beyond the reach of Matt Frey at third base to give CSF the lead.
Michigan tied the game in the bottom of the frame as Joe Stewart was hit by a pitch with one out and moved up three bases on a trio of wild pitches. Michigan continued to press, putting runners in scoring position, but Riley Bertram just got under a pitch and flew out to deep center field to end the inning.>
Noah Rennard relieved Smith in the eighth and pitched a crisp ninth inning to keep Fullerton at bay and set up the winning ninth-inning rally. He earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Weisberg took the loss after allowing two hits, two walks, a hit batter and four wild pitches in 2.1 innings.
