ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team split a Big Ten Conference doubleheader against Iowa Saturday (April 2) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Iowa took game one by a score of 8-2 before the Wolverines received some masterful pitching and timely hitting to take the nightcap by a score of 2-0.
The teams will conclude their weekend series Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.
In the second game, Michigan jumped out to a second-inning lead on a fielder's choice groundout from Riley Bertram to score Jimmy Obertop, who led off with a walk. The score remained 1-0 through seven innings as Connor O'Halloran (3-2) matched scoreless innings with Iowa ace Adam Mazur (2-2).
O'Halloran dazzled against the Hawkeyes, throwing seven scoreless innings in which he struck out eight batters and scattered four hits, including two of the infield variety. He gave way in the eighth inning to Noah Rennard, who worked around a two-out double to throw a scoreless inning.
Michigan finally got to Mazur again in the eighth inning as Brandon Lawrence touched the righty ace for a 372-foot solo homer down the right-field line to give U-M a 2-0 lead and chase Mazur from the game. Mazur ended his day allowing just three hits in seven innings while striking out four.
Rennard yielded a leadoff double in the ninth and was replaced by closer Chase Allen, who retired all three batters he faced, ending the game with a swinging strikeout for his third save of the season.
Iowa led from wire to wire in the opening game as Hawkeyes starter Dylan Nedved kept the Michigan bats at bay through seven innings of work.
Iowa scored an unearned run in the first inning and then broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning on the strength of four hits and featuring aggressive baseball with hit-and-run and small-ball action.
The Hawkeyes made it 8-0 before Michigan chased Nedved in the eighth inning after loading the bases with no outs. Matt Frey delivered a two-run single in the inning, but a spectacular play by centerfielder Kyle Huckstorf robbed Tito Flores of extra bases and ended the threat.
Clark Elliott was the lone Wolverine with multiple hits in the game. Iowa's Michael Seegers led all players with a 4-for-4 game to go with three runs batted in.
Walker Cleveland provided Michigan with impressive relief, as the lefty struck out a career-high six batters, including the side in the ninth inning. All told, he scattered two hits in 4.1 innings of work.
