ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision to visiting Iowa in a Big Ten Conference game Sunday (April 3) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Iowa scored single runs in the first and third and two more in the fourth to chase Michigan starter Jacob Denner (3-3) from the game early on. Noah Rennard came on in the top of the fourth and got an inning-ending double-play ball with the bases loaded to keep U-M within striking distance.
The Michigan offense had its chances early, with Clark Elliott consistently setting the table with hits in each of his first two at bats. The Wolverines recorded four hits through the first three frames but could not break through against Iowa righty Ty Langenberg (4-0), who registered seven punchouts in that span, with six coming against the heart of Michigan's order.
Langenberg, who struck out 11 batters in 5.2 innings of five-hit ball, held Michigan at bay and his Hawkeyes then delivered a big blow in the sixth inning when, with two outs, U-M reliever Chase Allen hit a pair of batters and was in trouble. He appeared to strike out cleanup hitter Keaton Anthony, blazing a 1-2 fastball right on the outside corner, only to have it called a ball. The next pitch was driven over the left field wall for a three-run homer and a 7-0 score.
Iowa added three more runs in the eighth inning on three singles, two walks and a hit batter to take a 10-0 lead.
Michigan batters struck out 14 times through seven innings and finished the game with 16 whiffs. The Wolverines were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position before Tito Flores came through with an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning. Riley Bertram followed that with a sacrifice fly to make it a 10-2 game and a third run came home on a balk.
Elliott and Joe Stewart led the U-M offense with two hits each. Â
On Wednesday (April 6), Michigan returns to Ray Fisher Stadium with a 4 p.m. non-conference game against Purdue Fort Wayne. All fans 18 years and under will receive free admission.
