ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team received a complete team performance Saturday (April 9) as the Wolverines defeated Cal State Fullerton by a score of 8-2 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, to clinch the weekend series against the four-time national champion Titans.
The teams will conclude the weekend series Sunday at 1 p.m.
Ted Burton staked Michigan to a first-inning lead as his sacrifice fly scored Joe Stewart, who reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second base on a balk, and took third on a wild pitch.
Michigan made it a 4-0 game after three innings as Riley Bertram delivered an RBI single and Jimmy Obertop a sacrifice fly while another run came home on a bases-loaded hit batter. Cal State Fullerton got two of those runs back in the top of the fourth as Cole Urman connected with a 2-2 fastball and hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot, over the left-field wall.
Clark Elliott factored in a pair of U-M runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the four-run advantage. After Jordon Rogers got to second on a pair of errors, Elliott logged an RBI single and then stole second base. Then, he took off for third base on a 1-2 pitch to Burton, who sent a high chopper over the third baseman's head and hustled into second with an RBI double and a 6-2 lead.
Fullerton threatened in the sixth, loading the bases on a trio of singles, but Cameron Weston induced an inning-ending double play to shortstop, with Bertram making a nifty turn at second. Michigan then stepped up the pressure in the sixth, scoring twice and getting deeper into Fullerton's bullpen.
Elliott doubled with one out and scored on a single from Stewart, who then stole second and scored on a two-out single by Matt Frey to give U-M an 8-2 lead.
Weston earned the win, evening his record at 2-2 on the season following a solid 6.0-inning effort in which he allowed two runs on nine hits while striking out six batters, including four straight at one point.
Noah Rennard relived Weston and struck out the side in the seventh and ninth innings, adding another strikeout in the eighth.
Elliott was on base in all five plate appearances for Michigan, going 2-for-2 with three walks. He combined with Stewart to score six of the team's eight runs.
