COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 18-ranked Maryland used a seven-run second inning to upend the University of Michigan baseball team on Saturday night (May 14) by a score of 20-6 at Bob Smith Stadium.
Michigan started quickly as Jimmy Obertop plated the first two runs of the game with a bases-loaded double in the first inning before Ted Burton led off the second inning with a long solo homer to left-center to give U-M a 3-0 advantage.
The lead was short-lived as Maryland struck for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning, with three U-M pitchers struggling to make headway against the league's top offense. Six of the runs in the frame came with two outs, with Matt Shaw delivering a big blow in the form of a three-run homer to the short porch in right field.
Matt Frey kept Michigan close, driving his second homer of the series -- a two-run shot to center field -- to score Joe Stewart, who led off with a walk and stole second base. Riley Bertram added an RBI single in the fifth to chase Maryland starter Ryan Ramsey (10-0), the Big Ten's ERA and wins leader, but Michigan still trailed 10-6 through five innings.
In the seventh, Maryland broke the game open. Shaw hit a grand slam, his third home run of the night to right field, giving the home team a 15-6 lead. Maryland added five more runs in the eighth, working deep against the U-M bullpen.
Frey led Michigan with two this, while Stewart and Clark Elliott stole two bases each. Frey accounted for four of Michigan's six runs, driving in two and scoring twice.
Michigan and Maryland will wrap up their three-game set on Sunday (May 15) at noon from Bob Smith Stadium. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
