COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan baseball team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but allowed eight runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth as No. 18-ranked Maryland topped the Wolverines 15-10 on Sunday (May 15) at Bob Smith Stadium.
The three-game sweep at the hands of the Terrapins marked the first for Michigan in a Big Ten series since 2018. The Wolverines, who entered the weekend in contention for the regular-season title, led all three games but could not hold down the Terrapins, who ranked third nationally in home runs.
Michigan scored in the first inning when Joe Stewart singled, stole his 19th base of the season, and came around on a two-out RBI single to center field from Jimmy Obertop.
Michigan extended its lead in the fourth on an RBI double from Riley Bertram, who took a ball high off the center-field wall. Maryland escaped further damage as shortstop Matt Shaw robbed Jake Marti on a rocket up the middle, laying out to snare the shot and making the throw to first base to keep two runs off the board.
A sacrifice fly from Matt Frey made it a 3-0 game in the fifth, but another runner was stranded at third as Maryland's pitcher Nick Dean continued to work around trouble in the high-level matchup.
Maryland got going in the bottom of the fifth with eight runs on four home runs. Chris Alleyne lofted a double against an outfield shift, and Nick Lorusso drove the first pitch that he saw over the center-field wall for a two-run homer. Shaw then slapped a solo homer down the line in right field and just over the short porch to tie things at 3. Following two hard singles, Ian Petruz drove a home run over the right-field wall for a 6-3 lead as Michigan went to the bullpen. Alleyne then lined a routine fly ball to right that skipped off the glove of right fielder Joey Velazquez and over the fence for a two-run homer.
Velazquez responded in the top of the sixth with a leadoff home run of his own, high over the wall in left-center. Michigan threatened with two more base runners and chased Dean from the game, but reliever Will Glock induced a fly ball to get out of the jam. Maryland opened the margin once more in the bottom of the frame with four more runs coming across with two outs as the Terrapins took a 12-4 lead.
The Wolverines did continue the fight, scoring six times in the ninth inning thanks to two-run doubles from Bertram and Ted Burton and a two-run homer from Clark Elliott, but ran out of time as Maryland fought its way into a first place tie in the Big Ten standings.
Bertram (three RBI), Obertop, Flores and Stewart led Michigan's offense with two hits each as part of the Wolverines' 13-hit attack. Ahmad Harajli provided a measure of relief for the U-M bullpen, throwing two innings of scoreless, one-hit relief.
The Wolverines will return home for its next game, a single game against rival Michigan State on Tuesday (May 17) at 6 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The matchup will be streamed live on B1G+.
