ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team came back from several deficits Friday night (May 6) as the Wolverines hit three late home runs to defeat visiting Indiana by a score of 8-4 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Indiana hit three solo home runs in the game, while Michigan connected for three homers between the seventh and eighth innings, scoring five times to turn a 4-3 deficit into an 8-4 lead.
Matt Frey's first-inning double scored Joe Stewart (hit by pitch) all the way from first base to stake Michigan to an early lead.
Indiana's Matthew Ellis tied the game in the top of the second when he took an elevated two-strike off-speed pitch from Connor O'Halloran into the wind and over the left-field wall. Another two-out homer in the third inning, this one from Hunter Jessee, gave the visitors a 2-1 lead.
Jesse extended the lead in the fifth inning with another two-out run as he slashed an RBI double down the line in right field.
Michigan got back on track in the bottom of the frame as the Wolverines began to sit on IU starter Jack Perkins' off-speed offerings. Ted Burton flared a single to right to start the inning and went to third after Clark Elliott laced a single to right. Stewart plated a run with a sacrifice fly and, with two outs, Jimmy Obertop took a first-pitch slider into right to score Elliott to tie things at 3.
However, the momentum was short-lived as Carter Mathison took a 3-2 fastball high over the right-field wall for Indiana's third solo homer of the night. Following 1.2 quality innings of relief from Willie Weiss, Obertop took that momentum back in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Stewart singled with one out and stole second. With a 1-1 count, Obertop sliced a low fastball just over the right-field wall to give U-M a 5-4 lead with his eighth homer of the season.
Dylan Stanton supplied some insurance in the eighth inning when he roped a low fastball over the left-center wall to provide Michigan with a 6-4 lead, marking the second consecutive start for Stanton with a homer. Following a walk, Elliott gave a bigger cushion when he crushed a fastball high over the right-field wall for a two-run shot to make it an 8-4 game.
Weiss earned the win in relief, while Noah Rennard struck out four batters in 2.0 scoreless innings to close out his fourth save of the season.
Elliott and Obertop led U-M with two hits apiece.
The teams will continue their three-game Big Ten Conference series on Saturday (May 7) with a 2 p.m. start at Ray Fisher Stadium.
