ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team couldn't hold a late lead Saturday (May 7) as the Indiana Hoosiers came from behind to claim a 6-5 victory and even the series at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Indiana (21-25, 7-10 B1G) scored three times in the seventh inning to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 lead before adding three runs in the ninth.
Matt Frey broke open a 2-2 game in the bottom of the fourth inning when he laced a two-out, bases-clearing double to the gap in right-center and give U-M its first lead of the day, 5-2.
Indiana scratched across a run with two outs in the fifth against Michigan starter Cameron Weston as four consecutive batters reached base, including IU's Tyler Doanes, who reached on a bases-loaded infield single.
Bad luck beset the Wolverines (24-19, 10-6 B1G) in the seventh inning as Indiana loaded the bases with no outs when a misplayed fly ball fell in left field and the Hoosiers' Matthew Ellis was hit by pitch, which plated a run and cut U-M's lead to 5-4 with no outs against LHP Angelo Smith. Lefty Jacob Denner then entered the game and induced a double-play ball before allowing a go-ahead RBI single to IU's Brock Tibbets that gave the Hoosiers a 6-5 advantage. Indiana continued the momentum in the top of the ninth, scoring three times to extend the lead.
Ty Bothwell earned the win for Indiana as the lefty provided 2.2 critical innings of two-hit relief with five strikeouts to improve to 2-1 on the season. Smith took the loss for Michigan; his record dips to 1-1.
Michigan and Indiana will wrap up the three-game Big Ten Conference series on Sunday (May 8). With the series now evened, the rubber match is set for 1 p.m. at Ray Fisher Stadium. » Buy Tickets
