ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a game that saw six lead changes and three ties, Indiana emerged victorious as the Hoosiers downed the University of Michigan baseball team on Sunday (May 8) by a score of 9-8 at Ray Fisher Stadium.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the second inning, Michigan immediately tied things on a two-run line drive single from Dylan Stanton. Michigan took a 4-2 lead in the third thanks to a 432-foot home run off the bat of two-sport star Joey Velazquez that hit off the roof of the indoor track building beyond right field.
Indiana took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth as the Hoosiers capitalized on a pair of hit batters when Carter Mathison connected for a three-run homer to right-center.
Michigan regained the lead in the bottom of the frame as the back-and-forth continued. Matt Frey delivered Joe Stewart (single) with a double down the left field line and eventually came around on a line drive single up the middle from Tito Flores.
Brock Tibbets then lined a solo homer to left to start the sixth to tie it up again, 6-6. It was Tibbets again in the seventh as he laced a two-out double to right to score Josh Payne, who led off the inning with an infield single.
Michigan rallied again and reclaimed the lead, 8-7, as Frey and Velazquez worked their ways on base in the bottom of the seventh and came around to score as Riley Bertram dropped the barrel of his bat on a tough pitch to line a triple down the right field line.
Michigan couldn't hold the lead as a critical throwing error with two outs in the eighth paved the way for Indiana to score twice and reclaim the lead, 9-8, en route to the win.
Noah Rennard took the defeat in relief, dropping his record to 4-2 on the season, while Reese Sharp threw 3.0 innings of relief to earn his third win.
U-M will host Xavier on Tuesday, May 10, at 6 p.m. from Ray Fisher Stadium.
