ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team dropped both ends of the series-opening doubleheader against Indiana, 4-1 and 15-1 in six innings, on Saturday afternoon (April 29) in front of 1,881 fans at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field at Carol Hutchins Stadium.
Michigan (24-20, 10-9 Big Ten) struggled to stymie a potent IU offense, allowing 23 total hits on the day, including nine for extra bases. The Hoosiers (36-15, 14-5 Big Ten) scored early and late in the series opener, plating two runs in the first inning on back-to-back RBI hits to center field and tallied a run apiece in the fifth and seventh to add insurance.
The Wolverines, who left five runners on base in the opener, got on the board with two hits the seventh, including senior third baseman Audrey LeClair's RBI double to right-center, but could not follow up with more. Indiana's second baseman made a nice defensive stop on a hard grounder headed to right field to get the final out.
Michigan struck first in the second slate, scoring on junior catcher Keke Tholl's RBI double in the first inning, but Indiana scored 15 unanswered -- tied for the most allowed by U-M this season -- including seven runs in the sixth to push the game into run-rule territory. IU posted three two-run homers in the game, including off the bat of the national home-run leader Taryn Kern in the fourth and sixth frames.
LeClair, Tholl and freshman second baseman Indiana Langford led the Wolverines with two hits apiece in the twinbill.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Lauren Derkowski (17-9) took the game-one loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts through six innings, while junior RHP Jessica LeBeau (7-11) took the second game with five runs allowed on four hits and a walk and two strikeouts through three innings.
Michigan will close out its weekend series against Indiana at 2 p.m. on Sunday (April 30) at Alumni Field at Carol Hutchins Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU, and tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.
