I have been telling friends and media alike -- now that the coaching search is over, I can get a good night's sleep. The reason for a good night's sleep is not because the search is completed, it is because we have a football coach who can win and bring our football community back together.
Believe me, I know there will be naysayers, but Brady Hoke was the correct choice ... no doubt.
Not only did he do a marvelous job turning around two football programs, but it is how he connects with his players. When I addressed the Michigan team yesterday, the announcement of Brady Hoke's name created an air of excitement -- the excitement this team needs to get ready for the 2011 season.
It was during this search process that my interest in Hoke continued to get stronger and stronger.
Coaches from across the country told me how Brady would build programs. He knows how to identify talent, he knows how to find the right coaching mix, and he knows how to meld them together. He knows how to utilize his talent.
Brady is a player's coach. He is not soft, he is tough, he is fair.
Hoke is genuine. He is not built on the needs of a PR empire, he is a football coach that loves the sport and loves Michigan. He has never been shy saying that, even while coaching at Ball State and San Diego State. He wanted this position at Michigan, and I learned fast that I wanted Hoke to have the head coaching job at Michigan. He wanted it so much he didn't even ask what it pays. He just said, "I want to coach Michigan."
Getting our football program turned around quickly is the goal. We needed a coach to do just that and pull together our current players, former lettermen and our fans.
Michigan has the coach with the proven track record to accomplish all of what we need.
Yes, I believe we can all sleep well tonight.
