Watch Live: Student-Athlete Graduation Celebration (May 2, 7:30 p.m.)

University of Michigan director of athletics Dave Brandon will regularly offer his view on a variety of topics related to U-M and intercollegiate sports. All his posts, along with links to related content, will be available on his page, mgoblue.com/brandon, and he is also on Twitter at @DaveBrandonAD.

This weekend the University of Michigan will hold graduation ceremonies at Michigan Stadium for the entire student body along with other ceremonies for the 19 schools and colleges.

On Friday night (May 2) at Crisler Center, the University of Michigan Athletic Department will host the first celebration event for the graduating Wolverine student-athletes, their families and friends. The NFL Network's Rich Eisen, a 1990 graduate of the University of Michigan, will be the speaker.

The response from the student-athletes has been great and the parents even more so. Approximately 600 individuals including 120 student-athletes will attend the ceremony.

Our coaches discuss the value and prestige of obtaining a Michigan degree. This event is the culmination of their education and all of their unique experiences as a student-athlete here at U-M. We are honored to be a part of this special occasion and to help celebrate this milestone in the lives of our student- athletes and their families.

Graduation is not as much of an ending as it is a new beginning. It is a chance to impact the world, and to do it with the help of what they learned at U-M in the classroom and on the field of competition.

When they leave campus, they will be among the University's more than 10,000 living student-athlete alumni. We want them to remember they are still an integral part of "The Team, The Team, The Team" and we will continue to support each individual the best we can.

A handsome compass with the block M will be given to each student-athlete. On the compass, the longitude (42°, 16' N) and latitude (83°, 44' W) of the University of Michigan campus are engraved on the beveled edge. This graduation gift will serve as a reminder that wherever the road of life leads each and every one of them, the compass will lead them back home -- back to the University of Michigan.

We work hard to create positive academic and athletic experiences for our student-athletes and prepare them to be successful in life. Now, the U-M Athletic Department graduation offers one more opportunity to applaud our student-athletes for everything they have accomplished.

And, even more important, everyone associated with Michigan Athletics can celebrate the positive impact these graduates will have in their communities and on our world as they continue to be "leaders and best" and be great ambassadors for the University of Michigan.

Thank you. We are proud of you all! Go Blue!
