U-M Finish: 9th in jazz; 10th in hip hop
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Michigan dance team secured a pair of top-10 spots in the nation this weekend (Jan. 18-19), highlighted by a ninth-place finish in Division 1A jazz, at the Universal Dance Association College Dance Team Nationals held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. The Wolverines were the only Big Ten team to finish in the top 10 in both performance categories.
U-M performed both its jazz and hip hop routines during the semifinals on Saturday (Jan. 18). Following the semis, the judges moved the Wolverines into the jazz finals today (Jan. 19) along with 11 other teams from across the country. With one more chance to perform today, the Maize and Blue sewed up ninth place in the nation.
The Michigan nationals jazz team is: seniors Amy Domino, Julia Mazur, MJ Miele and Melissa Rich; juniors Kelsey Arnold, Cassidy Lawlor, Rachel Lee, and Kendal Zemmin; sophomores Jordan Haag, Madison Haase, Penelope Koulos, Maycee Nicholas and Ashley Selleke; freshmen Maria Tomsovic and Emily Trinkler.
The Wolverines narrowly missed out on the hip hop finals when they placed 10th following Saturday's semifinals. Nine teams moved into today's final round. Cincinnati took first place in Sunday's finals.
The U-M nationals hip hop team is: seniors Kristen Adamowski, Kelsie Breit, Domino, Miele and Rich; juniors Arnold, Dani Johnson, Lawlor and Zemmin; sophomores Haase, Nicholas and Selleke; freshmen Rachel Hofsess, Tomsovic and Trinkler.
The jazz piece was choreographed by Brandon Bryant, who finished runner-up in season five of "So You Think You Can Dance." The hip-hop piece was choreographed by Oscar Hernandez, a nationally touring dancer who most recently performed with Napoleon and Tabitha (Nappytabs) in the summer of 2013.
The nationals marked the final competition for seniors Adamowski, Breit, Chrissy Papetti, Domino, Mazur, Miele and Rich.
