SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Fifth-year senior Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) allowed just one hit in seven innings of work, and Erik Bakich earned his 100th career win as a head coach as the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Air Force, 8-2, on Saturday night (Feb. 15) in the Texas State Invitational at Bobcat Ballpark. The Wolverines scored a pair of runs in four innings as U-M earned its first win of the 2014 season.

Ballantine struck out five and allowed an unearned run in the fourth in his first start since injury cut his season short last April. Ballantine's only hit allowed was a leadoff single by Griffin Jax in the second inning. Freshman Mac Lozer (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) allowed a run and struck out a batter in the final two innings of work.

Bakich earned his 100th win in his second year as the Wolverines' head coach after three seasons as the mentor at Maryland.

Michigan jumped on the Falcons with a pair of runs in the first. Junior Jackson Glines (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City C.C.) walked to open the inning. He scored on sophomore Jacob Cronenworth's (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) triple to the gap in left. Cronenworth then came around to score on junior Kyle Jusick's (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) single to right. The Wolverines scored two more runs in the second. Sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) struck out but reached on a wild pitch. Junior Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and freshman Ramsey Romano (El Cajon, Cailf./Valhalla) both scored on a throwing error by the Falcon catcher.

The Maize and Blue put up two more runs in the fifth. Maezes doubled to open the inning. He advanced to second on Cronenworth's groundout to first. Jusick was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Both scored on freshman Jackson Lamb's (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) double to straightaway center field, giving Michigan a 6-1 lead. The Wolverines added insurance in the eighth as Glines tripled to right to score freshman Johnny Slater (Southfield, Mich./Southfield Lathrup) and senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn).

Jusick and Martin had two hits apiece in the win, while Glines and Lamb drove in a pair of runs.

Michigan will wrap up play in the Texas State Invitational Sunday afternoon (Feb. 16) as the Maize and Blue faces Washington. First pitch is scheduled for noon CST (1 p.m. EST).
