BERKELEY, Calif. -- For the second straight day, the University of Michigan baseball team fell in extra innings at California, this time by a 6-5 score in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 16) at Evans Diamond. The Wolverines led 5-1 in the fourth, before the Golden Bears completed a come-from-behind win, capped by Mike Reuvekamp's single to left with one out in the 10th inning.
The Maize and Blue was led on offense for the second straight day by junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), who went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and a run batted in. Freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) added two hits and two RBI, while senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) scored a pair of runs for U-M. On the mound, sophomore James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) struck out four and allowed seven hits and three runs in a six-inning start.
After Michigan failed to score with the bases loaded in the top of the first, Cal put up a run in the bottom of the frame. Derek Campbell opened the inning with a single to left. With one out, Devon Rodriguez doubled down the righ field line as Campbell scored from first base.
Michigan tied the game at one in the top of the third as the first three Wolverines reached base. Biondi was hit by a pitch and moved to third on an O'Neill double down the leftfield line. Biondi trotted home on Maezes' single through the right side.
Freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) led off the fourth with a line-drive home run, the first of his U-M career, to rightfield, giving the Maize and Blue the 2-1 lead. Sophomore Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) reached on a throwing error with one out and moved to third on a Biondi single. Delaney scored as O'Neill doubled for the second time on the day. An infield single from Maezes brought in Biondi, and O'Neill came home on a wild pitch, making it 5-1 Wolverines. Andrew Knapp cut the Michigan lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run to leftfield.
Rodriguez singled home Brian Celsi in the seventh, cutting the Michigan lead to 5-4. Then for the second straight game, the Golden Bears tied the game in the ninth. Celsi led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Campbell. Celsi stole third and scored on a Knapp single through the hole on the left side.
In the 10th, John Soteropulos walked to lead off the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He scored on Reuvekamp's walk-off single.
Cronenworth was tagged with the loss, allowing three hits and two runs with two strikeouts and two walks in 2.1 innings. Senior Kyle Clark (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) did not allow a run in an inning of work on the mound.
Michigan and California wrap up their three-game series Sunday (Feb. 17) at 10:30 a.m. PST at Evans Diamond. This is a time change from the original schedule.
