PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- A pair of three-run innings and solid pitching lifted the University of Michigan baseball team to a 9-1 win over Fordham Friday afternoon (Feb. 22) at Tradition Field #5. It was the first win of the season for the Maize and Blue and first for head coach Erik Bakich.
Sophomore James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) earned the win on the mound, scattering six hits and allowing just a run with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings. At the plate, junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) belted his first home run of the season, a three-run shot to left in the eighth inning. O'Neill joined senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) with two hits on the day, as Biondi drove in and scored a pair of runs. Freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) drove in two runs on sacrifice flies, and sophomore Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) scored two runs.
Michigan jumped on the board in the bottom of the first. Biondi and O'Neill led off with singles. Biondi advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Cronenworth sacrifice fly. Bourque got out of jams in each of the first three innings but gave up a run in the fourth.
U-M took the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning. Sophomore Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) tripled to the gap in right with one out. Freshman Jack Sexton (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep) struck out but reached on a wild pitch that scored Jusick. Biondi made it 4-1 with a two-run single through the hole in right. In the sixth, Zott walked, stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored on a bunt single from sophomore Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade).
The Wolverines plated a run in the seventh as freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) singled, stole second and third and scored on Cronenworth's second sacrifice fly. Michigan ended the scoring in the eighth with O'Neill's three-run home run, his ninth career round-tripper.
U-M also received solid bullpen performances from senior/junior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) and junior Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central). McAnallen struck out a batter and allowed a hit in 1.1 innings. Lakatos fanned a pair in two innings, allowing two hits and a walk.
Michigan and Fordham will play a doubleheader Saturday morning (Feb. 23) at 11 a.m. at Tradition Field #5.
