HOUSTON, Texas -- Sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) went 3-for-3 at the plate and the pitching combination of junior Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) and fifth-year senior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) struck out five but a two-run Houston fourth was the difference in a 2-1 win over the University of Michigan baseball team Friday night (Feb. 21) at Cougar Field.
Maezes upped his average to .353 and had singles in the first, sixth and eighth to go along with a third-inning walk. Szkutnik struck out a pair and allowed seven hits and two runs in 6.1 innings while McAnallen had three punchouts in 1.2 innings of relief.
Michigan struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Junior Jackson Glines (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City C.C.) led off the frame with an infield single. He moved up 90 feet on a Maezes single. Sophomore Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up a base and junior Kyle Jusick's (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) sacrifice fly plated U-M's first run of the game. It also was the first run allowed by a Houston starting pitcher this season.
Houston took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on an RBI infield single and a run-scoring fielder's choice. The Wolverines had runners in scoring position in the third, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Maezes was thrown out at the plate by the UH center fielder. The Cougars also picked off a runner at second with one out in the eighth.
Michigan and Houston continue the three-game set on Saturday night (Feb. 22) at 6:30 p.m. CST (7:30 p.m. EST).
