PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Freshman Will Drake (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) singled with no one out and runners at second and third in the bottom of the ninth to give the University of Michigan baseball team a 6-5 walk-off win over Iona Sunday (Feb. 26) at Digital Domain Park. Michigan won three of four games from the Gaels this weekend.
Freshman Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) opened the ninth with a walk and went to third as junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by the Iona first baseman. Drake brought home the winning run with a single up the middle.
Iona tied the game at five with two runs in the top of the eighth and looked to take the lead in the ninth, but Biondi threw out Mike Chiaravolloti trying to score from second on a single by Matt Kriss for the second out of the frame. Senior Kevin Vangheluwe (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair Shores), who earned the win on the mound in his first appearance of the season, got Joe Smith to pop out to end the inning.
Michigan struck first with three runs in the first inning. Biondi was hit by a pitch and Drake walked. Both runners stole a base, and the bases became loaded after a walk to senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Cailf./Pinole Valley). Senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) brought home two runners with a double to left, and sophomore Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly that scored Crank.
The Gaels scored a run in the second and two in the fourth to tie the game at three, but the Maize and Blue answered with a pair of runs in the fifth. In a carbon copy of the opening frame, Biondi was hit by a pitch and Drake walked to start the inning. Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) doubled home a run and Drake scored on a double play ball to second, making it 5-3.
The score remained 5-3 until Iona scored twice in the eighth, when Bobby Vitualno tripled home a pair of runs to even the count. Vangheluwe came in and got a groundout with a runner on third to preserve the tie and set up Drake's ninth-inning heroics.
O'Neill had two hits for the day and eight on the weekend. Lorenz drove in a pair of runs, while Biondi and Drake scored two runs apiece. For Iona, Kriss had three hits and Vitulano drove in three runs.
Junior/sophomore Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) started the game on the mound for Michigan and gave up three runs and four hits with a strikeout in three innings. Freshman Matt Ogden (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) struck out five and gave up three hits and two runs in 4.2 innings of relief.
Michigan stays in the Sunshine State to face Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday (Feb. 29) at 6:30 p.m. in Fort Myers, Fla.
