ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team dropped a tight 2-1 decision to St. John's on Saturday night (Feb. 27) on day two of the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge on Al Lang Field at Progress Energy Park, the former spring training home of the Tampa Bay Rays. The game was delayed for three-and-a-half hours after rain cut through the area during the morning, pushing back the day's entire schedule.
Senior catcher Chris Berset (Vienna, Va./Heights School) reached base three times and scored the Wolverines' lone run.
Junior pitcher Matt Miller (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) gave up two runs on seven hits, five of which were singles, and struck out five in the loss. Sophomore/freshman pitcher Bobby Brosnahan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and junior pitcher Kolby Wood (Eau Claire, Mich./Berrien Springs) combined for a perfect three innings in relief.
After loading the bases in the fourth and fifth without pushing across runs, Michigan finally ended its run drought in the seventh to cut its deficit to 2-1. Berset led off the inning with a blast off the wall in rightfield that put him in scoring position. Freshman shortstop Derek Dennis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) hit a hot shot up the middle to set up senior rightfielder Nick Urban (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall) for the ensuing sacrifice fly.
Michigan found itself behind by a 2-0 score after the Red Storm put up a run in both the second and third innings. SJU scored on a two-out single in the second and a run-scoring double in the third inning to secure the only runs it needed as the Maize and Blue pitchers held its opponent scoreless for the remainder of the game.
The Wolverines wrap up the the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 28) with USF at the Naimoli Complex in St. Petersburg, Fla. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
