PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Sophomore Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) broke a 7-all tie with a single to right in the eighth, giving the University of Michigan baseball team an 8-7 win over Mount St. Mary's on day one of the Snowbird Invitational Friday (March 1) at the North Charlotte Regional Park.
Michigan trailed 7-6 going into the bottom of the eighth. Junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) singled to left with one out. O'Neill stole second with two outs and tied the game on freshman Jacob Cronenworth's (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) single up the middle. Michigan put runners on first and second after sophomore Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) reached on an error. Cronenworth later scored on Jusick's game-winning single.
The Wolverines opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first. Senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) walked and moved to third on an O'Neill single. Freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) plated Biondi with a sacrifice fly. O'Neill stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored on Cronenworth's grounder to second. Mount St. Mary's tied the game at two in the second, but Michigan came back with three runs in the third. Biondi was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. He stole second, his 90th career stolen base, and scored on a Maezes single. White singled with two outs and Jusick was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Junior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) then walked, forcing in Maezes. A wild pitch brought in the third run of the inning, making it 5-2 Wolverines.
Mount St. Mary's batted around in the fourth, scoring four runs to take a 6-5 lead. Michigan tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as senior/junior John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle) drove in Cronenworth with a sacrifice fly to right. Mount St. Mary's retook the lead with a run in the seventh.
O'Neill went 4-for-5 at the plate for the Maize and Blue while White had a pair of hits. Senior/junior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) earned the win in relief. He struck out a batter and did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings. Senior Kyle Clark (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
Michigan continues play in the Snowbird Invitational Saturday morning (March 2) with a doubleheader against Saint Louis. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
