FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell at Florida Gulf Coast, 6-4, in the Wolverines' first true road game of the year on Wednesday night (March 2) at Swanson Stadium. Michigan came from behind to tie the game at four in the top of the sixth, but the Eagles responded with a run in the sixth and added one in the seventh.

U-M fell behind in the first as FGCU belted a two-run home run off Michigan starter and redshirt sophomore Matt Broder (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood). The Eagles then added a run in the second.

Michigan scored its first run in the third inning. Redshirt freshman Zach Johnson (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) singled to open the inning and moved to third on a double from redshirt sophomore Kevin Krantz (Traverse City, Mich./Central) and scored as redshirt senior Anthony Toth (Lorain, Ohio/St. Ignatius) reached on an error.

However, Florida Gulf Coast answered with a run in the third on two singles and a double, all with two outs.

The Maize and Blue scored a run in the fourth as junior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) walked, moved to second on a single from redshirt junior Garrett Stephens (Davison, Mich./Davison), went to third on a walk to sophomore Derek Dennis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and scored on a bases-loaded walk by Krantz.

Michigan then tied the game at four in the sixth. Junior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) singled to open the inning, went to second on a passed ball and scored on a one-out single by sophomore Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child). Krantz, who walked with one out, moved to third on a Toth walk and scored on a fielder's choice from freshman Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty).

The Eagles answered right back with a run in the sixth and capped their scoring in the eighth on a home run to leftfield.

Junior Brandon Sinnery (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) was tagged with the loss, pitching 2.1 innings of relief and allowing two runs and three hits with a strikeout. Broder started for U-M and allowed three runs and five hits in 1.2 innings. Junior Kevin Vangheluwe (St. Clair, Mich./Lake Shore) struck out four in three innings of relief, giving up one run and four hits. The win went to Harrison Cooney in relief. He struck out a batter in two-thirds of an inning.

Biondi, O'Neill, Stephens and Lorenz all had two hits, while Krantz scored a pair of runs. For FGCU, Stephen Wickens, Tim Roberson, Mike Reeves and Brandon Bednar had two hits apiece.

Michigan starts play in the Bearkat Baseball Invitational Friday (March 4) against Massachusetts. First pitch is at 1:30 p.m. CST. U-M will then face the host Sam Houston State that same day at 6:30 p.m. CST.
