PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team entered the ninth inning tied, but Ohio State scored five unearned runs in the top half of the frame to claim a 9-4 decision on Friday night (March 2) at the Charlotte Sports Park.

Michigan had just tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth thanks to a two-run home run from sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), scoring junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child), who walked to open the frame. It was O'Neill's fourth home run of the season.

Sophomore Jake Engels (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) started the ninth and got Tim Wetzel to ground to short, but an error put the leadoff runner on for the Buckeyes. Engels walked Ryan Cypret and got a 2-0 count on Josh Desze, before Michigan went to fifth-year senior Kolby Wood (Buchanan, Mich./Eau Claire). He walked Desze to load the bases. Ryan Leffel then hit a shot back to Wood. He went to the plate, but the throw was wild, scoring Wetzel. David Corna brought home the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Joe Ciamacco, who had four runs batted in on the game, doubled home a pair of runs and Wetzel walked with the bases loaded to make it 9-4.

Michigan struck first in the first as O'Neill doubled home Biondi, who led off the inning reaching on an error by the OSU second baseman. Sophomore Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) then made it 2-0 in the fourth with a towering home run over the bullpen in left field. It was his first career home run.

U-M had four errors on the night and one led to Ohio State's first run. With two outs, senior Brandon Sinnery (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) struck out Desze. The ball was in the dirt and sophomore Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) threw to Winger at first but he was unable to hang on, scoring Kirby Pellant from third base. The Buckeyes tied the game at two in the seventh as Greg Solomon hit a home run. Ciamocco gave Ohio State the lead with a two-run double in the eighth before O'Neill's blast tied the game.

O'Neill, Delaney and junior/sophomore John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle) had two hits apiece for the Maize and Blue, while Biondi scored a pair of runs. O'Neill also drove in three runs and now has 11 RBI on the season.

Engels was tagged with the loss, giving up three unearned runs in the ninth. Sinnery went the first 6.1 innings, striking out seven and allowing six hits and one earned run with no walks. Desze won the game on the mound for the Buckeyes, while Trace Dempsey picked up his first save.

Ohio State was led by Ciamocco's three hits, while Solomon had two safeties.

Michigan will play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon (March 3) to continue the Snowbird Invitational. Michigan faces Chicago State at 12:30 p.m. and Xavier at 3 p.m. Both games are at the North Charlotte Regional Park in Port Charlotte, Fla.
