PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Sophomore Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) struck out five in seven innings of two-run ball, making a one-run first and two-run second stand up for the University of Michigan baseball team in a 5-2 win over Georgetown to conclude play in the Snowbird Invitational Sunday afternoon (March 3) at the North Charlotte Regional Park.

Szkutnik allowed just five hits and two runs with five strikeouts and a walk in his seven-inning start. Szkutnik had 1-2-3 innings in the second, sixth and seventh inning to earn his first win on the season. Senior Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) struck out a batter in the eighth, and classmate Kyle Clark (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) pitched a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts for his second save of the weekend.

Michigan started the scoring with a run in the first. Senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) led off the first with a bunt single and moved to third on a double from junior Michael O'Neill's (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) to the gap in right. Biondi trotted home on a groundout by freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair).

U-M then put up a pair of runs in the second as sophomore Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) doubled, stole third and scored on freshman Jack Sexton's (Golden Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep) single. O'Neill brought in the inning's second run on a single that scored senior/junior John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle).

Georgetown cut the Wolverine lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth, but White tripled and scored on a wild pitch, giving the Maize and Blue a two-run advantage. Michigan ended its scoring with a run in the seventh. O'Neill was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a hit from freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer).

Biondi, O'Neill, Cronenworth and White had two hits apiece, while White scored a pair of runs. O'Neill added his sixth double of the season, while White now has three triples in 2013.

Michigan will head to Fort Myers, Fla., Monday night (March 4) to face Florida Gulf Coast. First pitch at Swanson Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
