FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell behind 8-0 after five innings and a comeback effort fell short in an 11-6 loss at Florida Gulf Coast Monday night (March 4) at Swanson Stadium. Michigan had just one hit in the first six innings of play but battled for six runs in the seventh and eighth frames.
Michigan threatened in the top of the third as junior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) and freshman Jack Sexton (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep) walked with one out. FGCU got out of a jam on a ground-ball double play and went on to score four runs in the bottom of the frame. Two Michigan errors and a two-run single from Michael Suchy were the catalysts for the four-run third.
U-M also had a chance to score in the fourth, putting runners on second and third with one out, but a hard hit ball from sophomore Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) went right to the Eagle third baseman, who forced out junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) in a rundown. A fielder's choice to second ended that inning. Florida Gulf Coast added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Brandon Bednar.
Florida Gulf Coast extended the lead in the fifth after a bases-loaded walk and a Bednar two-run single. Michigan scored two runs without a hit in the seventh. Freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) was hit by a pitch to start the frame. He moved to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Martin. Sophomore Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) scored on a wild pitch to cut the Eagle lead to 8-2.
Florida Gulf Coast put up three runs in the seventh on four hits, two of them the extra-base variety. Michigan then scored four runs off five straight hits in the top of the eighth. Senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) singled and scored on a base hit from O'Neill. Freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) doubled down the right field line to score a run. Maezes was thrown out trying to steal third but Cronenworth reached on an infield single and sophomore pinch hitter Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) moved him to third with a single. Cronenworth scored on a wild pitch and Zott trotted to the plate after a Jusick sacrifice fly.
Biondi and O'Neill had two hits apiece for the Maize and Blue. Senior/junior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) allowed just one earned run with a pair of strikeouts in three innings of work and took the loss on the mound. FGCU's Zack Tillery allowed just one hit in six innings of work with three strikeouts to earn the win.
Michigan will travel to San Diego, Calif., for the USD Tournament on March 7-10. The Wolverines open the tournament against Holy Cross Thursday (March 7) at 2 p.m. PST.
