ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team continued its good fortune in the Sunshine State with a 3-2 win at UCF on Wednesday night (March 5) at Jay Bergman Field. The Wolverines struck out nine batters and had single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth frames for the victory.
Junior Jackson Glines (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City College) and freshman Ramsey Romano (El Cajon, Cailf./Valhalla) had two hits apiece; Glines extended his hit streak to seven games in the win. Sophomore Jake Balicki (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves) earned the win on the mound, striking out a pair in 2.2 innings of relief. Junior James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) picked up his first save as he allowed an unearned run with four strikeouts in three innings of work.
Michigan faced adversity in the bottom of the fourth as JoMarcos Woods singled, James Vasquez walked and Erik Barber reached on an infield single to load the bases with one out. The Wolverines got out of the jam as U-M turned a 6-4-3 double play on a Sam Tolleson groundball.
The Wolverines opened the scoring in the top of the fifth frame. Sophomore Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) led off with a walk. He moved to second as senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) reached on an error and scored on a single up the middle by Romano. In the seventh, freshman Jackson Lamb (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) led off the inning with a single. Pinch runner Johnny Slater (Southfield, Mich./Southfield Lathrup) moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the UCF catcher, giving U-M a 2-0 advantage.
UCF scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but a pickoff at first base by Bourque limited the damage. Junior Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and Glines led off the eighth with singles, putting runners on the corners. Cronenworth brought in Zott on a squeeze bunt, giving the Maize and Blue a 3-1 lead. UCF scored a run on a fielder's choice and throwing error, but Bourque had a pair of strikeouts in the frame, including one to pinch hitter Matt Diorio to end the game.
Freshman Brett Adcock (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) started the game on the mound for the Wolverines. He struck out three and allowed three hits and walked a pair in 3.2 innings.
Michigan makes its annual trip to Port St. Lucie, Fla., the Spring Training home of the New York Mets, for a four-game series with Princeton. The first game is Friday (March 7) at 1 p.m. at Tradition Field #5.
