HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- The University of Michigan baseball team closed the Henson Family Dealership/First National Bank of Huntsville Baseball Tournament with an 8-0 loss to host Sam Houston State on Sunday morning (March 6) at Don Sanders Stadium. The Wolverines end the tourney with a 2-2 record.

Michigan was shut out for the first time this season as the combination of Bearkat pitchers allowed just six Wolverine hits and struck out nine U-M batters.

Freshman Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) was making his first career start on the mound and shut out the Bearkats in the first three innings. Sam Houston State scored a run without the benefit of a hit in the fourth inning. Mark Hudson walked to open the frame. He moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a ground out. Hudson scored on the second wild pitch by Lakatos in the inning.

The Bearkats added a pair of runs in the fifth off redshirt sophomore reliever Bobby Brosnahan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer). Pinch hitter Luke Plucheck took the first pitch he saw over the wall in right field for his first home run of the season. John Hale singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on Ryan Mooney's single up the middle. Sam Houston State made it 6-0 in the sixth, highlighted by Hale and Braeden Riley's run-scoring single and a steal of home by Greg Olson.

In the seventh, Hudson homered to left to make it 7-0. The final run came across on a double by Kevin Miller that scored Olson.

Sophomore Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) had two of Michigan's six hits on the day. For Sam Houston State, Olson was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while Hale went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a run batted in.

Lakatos was tagged with the loss, allowing a run on just one hit while striking out two and walking two in 3.2 innings. Junior Kevin Vangheluwe (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake Shore) and redshirt freshman Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) did not allow a hit in their combined 2.2 innings of relief.

Michigan returns home from its Spring Break trip and will open up action this Friday afternoon (March 11) in the Bojangles Baseball Classic in Rock Hill, S.C. The Wolverines will face the host Winthrop Eagles at 4 p.m. at the Winthrop Ballpark.
