CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of Michigan baseball team pounded out nine hits but stranded nine runners on base as it fell at No. 12-ranked North Carolina, 9-1, on Sunday afternoon (March 7) at Boshamer Stadium.
Senior catcher Chris Berset (Vienna, Va./Heights School), senior/junior second baseman Anthony Toth (Lorain, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and sophomore third baseman John Lorenz (Frankfurt, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) each had two-hit afternoons for the Maize and Blue. Berset had Michigan's lone run batted in, driving in freshman centerfielder Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) in the first inning.
Michigan's first three batters reached, producing a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Biondi was issued a free pass and moved to third on a hit and run that Toth parachuted into rightfield. Berset then laced a ball into rightfield to easily score Biondi from third base. UNC answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and threatened again in the second before a double play ended the inning and kept the score at 2-1. UNC put two runs on the board in the first and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead. The Tar Heels blew the game open in the sixth frame, scoring five runs to take a commanding 9-1 edge.
Michigan returns to the Carolinas next weekend (March 12-14) for the Caravelle Resort Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Wolverines will play two games at BB&T Coastal Field, home of the Single A (Advanced) Myrtle Beach Pelicans sandwiched around a Saturday (March 13) doubleheader at Watson Stadium.
