SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- U-M's top three hitters -- senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child), junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) and freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) -- had three hits apiece, and senior Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) earned his first win of the season on the mound as the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Holy Cross, 6-3, on the first day of the USD Tournament Thursday afternoon (March 7) at Fowler Park.

Biondi scored a pair of runs, while O'Neill and Maezes each drove in a run. Ballantine went six innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts and a walk. Senior/junior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) struck out a batter in two innings of relief, while senior Kyle Clark (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) pitched the ninth inning for his third save of the year.

Michigan put up a pair of runs in the second. Sophomore Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) and junior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) walked to start the frame. White scored on a wild pitch as freshman Jack Sexton (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep) walked. Martin moved to second on a single by Biondi and scored on a failed pickoff attempt at second base.

Holy Cross put up three runs in the top of the fifth, but Michigan came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead. Biondi singled to lead off the inning, stole second and went to third on a single from Maezes. Freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) brought in Biondi with a single up the middle, and Maezes came home on an RBI groundout from sophomore Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Central). The Wolverines added two runs in the sixth on RBI singles from O'Neill and Maezes.
