SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team won the USD Tournament after wins over Holy Cross (7-4) and San Diego (5-2) on Sunday afternoon (March 10) in Fowler Park. A solid offensive start and eight strikeouts on the mound paced the Wolverines in the Holy Cross win, while a four-run eighth inning spurred the Maize and Blue to the win over the Toreros.

Michigan used some two-out magic to score a pair of first-inning runs in the opener. Freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) walked with two away, stole second and scored as classmate Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) singled and both runners moved up 90 feet on a throwing error. Cronenworth stole third and scored as sophomore Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) singled through the hole in right. Then with one out in the third inning, Cronenworth hit his second home run of the season, this one a solo shot to rightfield to give U-M a 3-0 advantage.

A perfect squeeze bunt from junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) scored sophomore Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and made it 4-0 Wolverines in the fourth, but Holy Cross came back to score three unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Maize and Blue scored twice in the seventh as Jusick's sacrifice bunt scored Cronenworth and sophomore Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) singled up the middle to score Jusick. Holy Cross put up a run in the bottom of the seventh, but another perfect squeeze bunt from Maezes scored senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) to put U-M on top 7-4.

Jusick went 4-for-4 in the win, while Cronenworth had three hits, three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Delaney added two hits and drove in a run. Sophomore Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) earned the win on the mound, striking out four and allowing four hits and three runs in five-plus innings. Cronenworth earned the save, pitching the final three innings with four strikeouts, three hits allowed and no runs.

In the nightcap, freshman Evan Hill (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) and San Diego starter Max MacNabb traded zeroes on the scoreboard until the Wolverines manufactured a run in the fifth. White walked to lead off the inning, went to second on a sacrifice, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a Wes Judish wild pitch.

San Diego took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run, pinch-hit single from AJ Robinson, but Michigan came back with four unearned runs in the top of the eighth. Jusick led off the inning with a hit by pitch. The Wolverines put two on as junior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) reached on a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt. Michigan loaded the bases on a Delaney walk and scored the tying run with a fielder's choice groundout by Biondi. O'Neill doubled in a run to give the Wolverines the lead, and Maezes brought in a pair of runs with a double to the gap in left.

Sophomore Matt Ogden (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) earned the win in relief, striking out three in 1.1 innings. Hill allowed two unearned runs and struck out five in 6.2 innings. Cronenworth picked up his second save of the day by hurling a scoreless ninth.

White had two hits in the second game, while Maezes drove in a pair of runs.

Michigan is scheduled to face Oakland on Tuesday (March 12) at 3:05 p.m. For updates on this game, please check MGoBlue.com.
