ROCK HILL, S.C. -- A three-run eighth inning by Winthrop broke a five-all tie and gave the host Eagles an 8-5 win over the University of Michigan baseball team on day one of the Bojangles Baseball Classic Friday afternoon (March 11) at the Winthrop Ballpark.

With the game tied at five in the bottom of the eighth, redshirt sophomore Matt Broder (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) issued a walk to start the frame, before a sacrifice bunt and two wild pitches put Winthrop up, 6-5. A walk, steal and single led to another tally, before a steal, single and sac fly stretched the score to 8-5.

Head coach Rich Maloney shook up the lineup order for the Winthrop game and it immediately paid dividends in the first. Sophomore Derek Dennis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a balk and scored on classmate Patrick Biondi's (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) single to center.

After freshman Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) was hit by a pitch, redshirt junior Garrett Stephens (Davison, Mich./Davison) walked to load the bases. Junior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) brought in a pair with a single to the rightfield gap, bringing home Biondi and O'Neill and making it 3-0 U-M.

Winthrop came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Michigan starting pitcher Tyler Mills (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) limited the damage, getting out of a bases loaded jam with an inning-ending double play.

However, Winthrop took a 5-3 lead in the second, before the Wolverines scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game at five. In the fifth, O'Neill led off with an infield single, stole second and third, and scored on a single up the middle from Lorenz. Dennis led off the sixth with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a Biondi single and scored on an O'Neill groundout to short.

Lorenz, Toth, Biondi and Lakatos had two hits apiece, while Lorenz drove in three runs. For Winthrop, Chas Crane was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, while Adam Gliebe and TJ Olesczuk had two hits apiece.

Eric Ruth earned the win for Winthrop as he went the final 4.2 innings, giving up four hits and a run with seven strikeouts. Broder was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs and three hits in two innings. Junior Kevin Vangheluwe (St. Clair, Mich./Lake Shore) struck out seven in five relief innings, allowing just four hits and no runs with three walks.

Michigan will continue the Bojangles Baseball Classic with a doubleheader tomorrow (Saturday, March 12) as the Wolverines face Stony Brook at 11 a.m. and Winthrop at 6 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C.
