Michigan (8-7) topped Holy Cross (2-11) 7-4 in college baseball action in Sunday's first game before beating host San Diego (11-6) 5-2 in the championship game in the USD Tournament at Fowler Park in San Diego, Calif. U-M finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, while San Diego and Saint Louis were both 2-2 and Holy Cross was 1-3.
Freshman 2B/RHP Jacob Cronenworth, who is hitting .304 (17-for-54), was 3-for-4 with his team-leading second homer of the season in the opening win vs. Holy Cross as he scored three times and collected three stolen bases. He was 0-for-4 vs. San Diego.
Cronenworth, who leads the team with 15 RBI, has four multi-hit games this season with two three-hit games.
Cronenworth (0-1, 2.45 ERA, two saves) saved both games for the Wolverines Sunday, moving to the mound from second base in the late innings. He allowed three hits in three scoreless innings and collected four strikeouts to earn his first save as a Wolverine while closing the 7-4 win over Holy Cross in Sunday's opener.
Cronenworth worked a scoreless ninth inning, allowing two hits, in the 5-2 win over host San Diego. Cronenworth has nine strikeouts in 7.1 innings in four mound appearances.
Sophomore 1B/DH Kyle Jusick, who is hitting .350 (14-for-40), was 4-for-4 with a double and a run-scoring sac bunt in Sunday's opener vs. Holy Cross. He was 0-for-1 with a sac bunt and a HBP in the game vs. San Diego.
Sophomore Kyle Jusick's first career four-hit game in the win over Holy Cross was his fourth multi-hit contest of 2013.
Freshman LHP Evan Hill (2-0, 1.07 ERA) pitched 6.2 innings allowing four hits. He was charged with two unearned runs in the championship game vs. San Diego. Hill left the game with a 1-0 lead with two outs and two runners on base in the seventh inning in the no-decision start vs. USD. Hill fanned five and he ranks second on the team with 14 K's.
Sophomore LHP Trent Szkutnik (2-2, 6.48 ERA) pitched five innings plus a leadoff walk in the sixth inning, allowing four hits and three runs with four strikeouts in the 7-4 win over Holy Cross. Szkutnik collected his second consecutive win while moving his U-M career record to 4-3.
Szkutnik leads the Wolverines with 16 strikeouts and is second on the team in innings pitched (16.2).
Sophomore 3B/SS Dylan Delaney, who is hitting .263 (10-for-38), reached base five times in seven plate appearance Sunday in San Diego.
Delaney was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a walk in Sunday's opener vs. Holy Cross, and he was 1-for-2 with a walk vs. San Diego in the championship game to extend his hitting streak to four games.
Senior captain CF Patrick Biondi, who is hitting .393 (24-for-61), was 2-for-8 in Sunday's doubleheader, going 1-for-4 with an eighth-inning single vs. Holy Cross and 1-for-4 with a first-inning single vs. San Diego. Biondi's eighth-inning infield grounder drove in the tying run at 2-2.
Biondi's single vs. San Diego in the nightcap extended his team-leading hitting streak to 22 games. He has hits in 33 of his last 35 games.
With one stolen base vs. Holy Cross, Biondi has six for the season as he pushed his all-time U-M stolen base record total to 94 stolen bases.
Biondi scored one run in each game Sunday, giving him a share of the team lead with 16 runs scored in 2013 and pushing his career total to 165 runs scored as he moved into seventh place on U-M's career runs scored list. On Sunday he snapped his tie for eighth with Brock Koman (163 runs, 2000-03) and moved ahead of Mike Watters (164 runs, 1983-85) for seventh. Bobby Scales (167 runs, 1996-99) is in sixth place.
Junior RF Michael O'Neill, who is hitting .441 (31-for-68) to lead the team, was 2-for-9 in U-M's two tournament wins in San Diego. He was 1-for-5 with a run-scoring single vs. Holy Cross and 1-for-4 with a run-scoring double in the eighth inning vs. San Diego.
With hits in both games Sunday, O'Neill's extended his hitting streak to 19 games, including the final four games of 2012.
O'Neill's eighth-inning double snapped a 2-2 tie and proved to be his second game-winning RBI of the season and his eighth career "gamer." O'Neill is U-M's active leader in career game-winning RBI.
Sophomore LF/DH Kevin White, who is hitting .321 (17-for-53), was 3-for-8 in the two Wolverine wins on Sunday in San Diego. White was 1-for-5 with a first-inning, run-scoring single vs. Holy Cross, and he was 2-for-3 with a walk vs. San Diego.
White, who has a three-game hitting streak, has six multi-hit games this season and 13 in his 53 games as a Wolverine.
Freshman SS/3B Travis Maezes, who is hitting .309 (17-for-55), drove in three runs in the two Wolverine wins in San Diego. He had a run-scoring sac bunt vs. Holy Cross, and his one hit of the day was a two-run double in the eighth inning to close out the scoring in the 5-2 victory over USD.
Maezes has a four-game hitting streak and four multi-hit games as a Wolverine.
