MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Senior pitcher Alan Oaks (White Lake, Mich./Divine Child) yielded just two earned runs, but the University of Michigan baseball team came up on the losing end of a 3-0 decision at No. 10-ranked Coastal Carolina on Sunday (March 14) at BB&T Coastal Field on the final day of the Caravelle Resort Classic.
Oaks was solid through six-and-one-third innings of work for Michigan but suffered the loss. Oaks matched a season high with seven strikeouts while giving up three runs, two of which were earned, on six hits. Sophomore designated hitter Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) led the Michigan offense with two hits.
The Wolverines kept the game within one run through six innings, trailing 1-0. The Chanticleers added two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run and a sacrifice fly. U-M posed a threat in the top half of the eighth with bases loaded but could not get anyone across.
Singles by Crank and senior rightfielder Nick Urban (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall) provided a spark in the Michigan offense in the top of the ninth. U-M moved a runner to third base but was unable to push anyone across and the final score held up at 3-0.
The Wolverines will return to action next weekend (Fri-Sun., March 19-21) when they travel to Port St. Lucie, Fla. Michigan will face Fordham for three games on Friday and Saturday (March 19-20) before taking on the New York Mets in an exhibition contest on Sunday (March 21).
