CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The University of Michigan baseball team opened the College of Charleston Tournament with a 4-3 win over Appalachian State on Friday afternoon (March 14) at Patriots Point. Two-run innings in the third and seventh frames, and nine strikeouts by U-M pitching guided the Wolverines to their second straight win.
Junior Kendall Patrick (Mitchell, S.D./Blackhawk College) and sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) had two hits apiece in the win. Freshman Keith Lehmann (Western Spring, Ill./Lyons Township) earned the win in relief. He struck out two and allowed two hits and a run in two innings. Junior Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) had six strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched, while sophomore Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) earned the save with a strikeout in 1.1 innings of work.
Michigan took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Freshman Ramsey Romano (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla) drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Maezes followed with a triple to the gap in right, making it 1-0 Wolverines. Cronenworth then plated Maezes with a ground out to second.
Appalachian State cut the lead to 2-1 on a Matt Brill home run in the fourth and tied the game in the sixth, but the Maize and Blue came back with another two spot in the seventh. Patrick opened the inning with a single. Junior pinch runner Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) came in and went to second on classmate Zach Zott's (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) walk. Senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved both runners up 90 feet. Romano then put down a squeeze bunt that scored White and an Appalachian State throwing error on the plate scored Zott, giving Michigan a 4-2 lead.
The Mountaineers scored a run in the eighth and had runners on first and second with two out. William Head singled to center and junior Jackson Glines (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City College) threw to the plate to get Brill just in time to preserve the one-run lead. Cronenworth recorded his third save of the season, striking out last batter to end the game.
Michigan will face host College of Charleston in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon (March 15) at 3 p.m. Both games will be seven-inning contests.
